But Universal Pictures obviously wanted to continue the franchise, following up Ultimatum in 2012 with The Bourne Legacy.

With The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, the series seemed like the perfect trilogy. The Bourne Identity and its subsequent sequels quickly became a new benchmark for action films due to their impressive dedication to practical stunts and effects ( that pencil moment in Identity is still wince-inducing) alongside a compelling mystery that had Bourne at its center. With Matt Damon starring as its titular hero, the franchise introduced a new breed of super-spy, and viewers couldn't get enough. Jason Bourne is now available on VOD and arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD December 6th, 2016.The Bourne film series proved to be hugely popular in the early 2000s with the arrival of The Bourne Identity, based on Robert Ludlum's book of the same name. The real question, though, still has to be whether Damon and Renner will ever end up sharing the same screen in one of these films. Still, as long as Greengrass is still happy to step in and put together some sublime, real world-based action sequences, there is at least a fun level of spectacle to look forward to, should Bourne 6 come together. The series has found a way to hover around the same basic idea for most of its sequels at this point - and audiences would appreciate a fresh approach to where to take Bourne next. The best thing another Bourne film could do is mix things up a bit. While the series has stepped far away from the original Robert Ludlum novels at this point, but establishing a new character played by Alicia Vikander and keeping some openings in mind for Bourne, could allow for future development. Meanwhile, Jason Bourne made $415 million on a $120 million budget, which is not bad at all and certainly finds Universal Studios in a position to keep things going with Damon - should he and Greengrass remain interested. That film also received a mixed reaction from critics and performed relatively low for a Bourne film at the box office. Marshall is very blunt about thoughts on Bourne Legacy's future, which is fitting.

That story is still out there as well but it’s not… we’re not talking about it." Keeping the participation of various cast members in mind, Marshall had this to say when asked about revisiting the world of Aaron Cross that started with Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy: Obviously you have to have a story that fits the actor so if we go on who knows where he’s going to go? He’s not always going to be the Jason Bourne that he was 15 years ago, but there are a lot of other things he could be doing in that world, so I think that’s what’s going to be exciting for us to try and explore." The question of Damon's age also came up, which allowed Marshall to briefly get into why there are ways to keep the franchise going:

We did leave it wide open at the end of the movie to continue on in Bourne’s world so we’ll see what we can come up with." It’s really about the story, just like on this one, everyone said ‘if you come to us with a good story, we’ll think about it.’ So right now, we’re taking a pause and then we’re going to dive back in and try to find a story. Obviously they’re very pleased with how the movie turned out. When asked directly by Yahoo whether or not there was interest in seeing future Bourne films, Marshall stated: During an interview, Marshall was able to provide a few details on what the atmosphere is like, as far as more adventures in the Bourne universe go.

One man who has stuck with the series all the way, including the 2012 spin-off/semi-sequel The Bourne Legacy, is famed producer Frank Marshall ( Indiana Jones, Jurassic World). With Jason Bourne's home release on the way, new chatter is starting to come out concerning the future of the Bourne franchise. Now it's a matter of where to take Bourne next. A somewhat mixed critical reception aside, the film was a box office success that managed to tell a story that caught audiences up with where Bourne is now. Given their recent success ( The Martian, Captain Phillips), they weren't pleading to get back in anyone's good graces, but instead continuing to develop a character they enjoy. This summer Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass brought Jason Bourneback to audiences.
